Who We Are

The desire to have a child is natural, and it is every woman’s dream to experience pregnancy and childbirth at a certain point in their adult lives. Conceiving a child may seem like the easiest thing in the world, but it is not the case for many couples.

The reintroduced I.V.F Zimbabwe team in Harare is there to assist couples failing to get pregnant naturally. The procedure was pioneered at the Avenues Clinic in the 1980s and 90s by obstetrician and gynaecologist Dr Tony Robertson.

52 people who are adults now were conceived through Dr Robertson’s In Vitro Fertilisation (IVF) programme also referred to as the test tube baby procedure. The programme was discontinued when Dr Robertson left the country for a year in 2000.

The team revamped the laboratory used for the IVF procedure, which adjoins one of the Avenues clinic operating theatres. The first IVF baby conceived in Zimbabwe was born on 2nd April 2017. To date the centre has recorded 82 live births and 20 ongoing pregnancies in 2020.

International Community

In 2017 the centre became part of the international community by joining ANARA (Africa Network and Registry for Assisted Reproductive Technology) to reduce the burden of infertility in Zimbabwe. ANARA’s function is to collect data on availability, effectiveness and safety of Assisted Reproductive Technology (ART) in Africa.

The centre is unique in that it provides interpreters for the Portuguese speaking patients (mostly from Mozambique) as well as facilitating accommodation. The centre also promotes direct 24 hour access to the consultants running the clinic.
